Murder of missing woman charged

BETHESDA — BETHESDA -- A homeless man was charged with murdering Laura Bettis Houghteling after his fingerprint was found on a pillowcase taken from the missing Bethesda woman's home, police said yesterday.

Hadden Irving Clark, 40, was arrested late Friday night in Bethesda on a warrant charging him with the murder of Ms. Houghteling, who was reported missing by her brother Oct.

20, police said.

The 23-year-old woman has not been found.

Montgomery County police said they obtained a warrant for Mr. Clark's arrest after determining that a fingerprint on a bloody pillowcase was his.

On Oct. 23, the pillowcase and a pillow were found in a wooded area, police reported, near the house Ms. Houghteling shared with her mother.

Ms. Houghteling's family said that nothing in the home seemed out of place after her disappearance, police reported.

But blood of the same type as the missing woman's was found in a bedroom at the house, as well as on the pillowcase and pillow. No other evidence was found in the woods, police said.

The suspect was being held without bond yesterday at the Montgomery County Detention Center.
