Robber wielding a knife thwarted by pharmacist
A man with a butcher knife tried to rob the Rite Aid Pharmacy in the 140 Village Shopping Center about 7:50 p.m. Tuesday.
Store employees described the man to Westminster police as a white man, 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighing 150 to 180 pounds, and 20 to 24 years old. He was wearing dark-framed glasses, a dark baseball cap with gold braid on the visor, a tan jacket, light-colored pants and black tennis shoes.
The man entered the drugstore and began questioning an employee about condoms and the material used in their manufacture.
The employee, unable to answer the questions, called for pharmacist Vincent DiPaula, who was in the rear of the store.
As Mr. DiPaula approached, the man brandished the knife and attempted to force the pharmacist toward the drug storage area.
Mr. DiPaula grabbed the knife and tried to wrest it from his assailant, receiving a small cut on his right hand.
The man fled and ran to the rear of the shopping center through a breezeway, where he got into a dark pickup truck operated by a second person.
Mr. DiPaula did not require hospital treatment, and the drugstore remained open.
Anyone who may have been in the area and has information about the man or the truck is asked to call Westminster police at 848-4646 or 857-TIPS.
