A West Baltimore woman was freed from the trunk of her car last night after an armed carjacker accosted her at a city intersection.
Jacqueline Gittings, 31, of the 5600 block of Belle Ave., told police she was stopped at a traffic light at Laurens and N. Stricker streets around 9 p.m. when a man with a semiautomatic handgun and wearing dark clothing approached, forced her to get out and walk to the back of the car and get into the trunk.
With the woman in the trunk of her 1983 Buick, the man drove less than a block before stopping next to the Lillian Jones Recreation Center in the 1300 block of N. Stricker St., where he parked the car and walked away.
Residents of the area called police around 9:15 p.m. when they heard the woman crying out. Police responded and freed the shaken but unharmed woman.
She was driven home by police and her car impounded while police processed it for clues that may lead to the carjacker's identification.
Police said the car had little gas and the man may have abandoned it rather than go to a gas station.
