Comptroller seeks unclaimed cash owners
The state Comptroller's Office is looking for the owners of unclaimed cash.
On Wednesday, the office will advertise the names of 10,852 Marylanders in newspapers across the state, including The Sun in Anne Arundel County, who have never claimed cash owed them by financial institutions, insurance companies, utilities and other corporations.
Maryland law requires that these companies report bank accounts, security deposits, wages, insurance benefits and the contents of safe deposit boxes that remain unclaimed after five years.
The office returned $5,724,346 in unclaimed cash to 8,506 people in fiscal 1992.

Neall presents 14 teen activity grants
Anne Arundel County Executive Robert R. Neall recently presented Teen Activity Grants to 14 non-profit community organizations.
These grants, amounting in some cases up to $4,000, are being used to develop healthy alternatives to substance abuse and addiction. The programs are specifically targeted at teens.
The 14 organizations include the Gambrills Teen Club, the YWCA of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County, the Maryland City Civic Association Teen Club, the Crofton Civic Association, GORC, the Severn Park Teen Venture, the Anne Arundel Gridiron Club, People Against Child Abuse. Parke West Homeowners Association, the Shady Side Boys & Girls Club, the Lula G. Scott Community Center, and the Annapolis Youth Athletic
Association.
Money available for home buyers
Anne Arundel County has money for two first-time homebuyer programs.
The Settlement Expense Loan Program provides up to $5,000 in settlement expenses.
The Mortgage Assistance Program can provide up to $10,000 to help homebuyers write down the mortgage on their first home.
Cost for homes funded by the program cannot exceed $88,000 for existing houses and $93,500 for new construction.
For households earning less than $28,901 annually, the mortgage term is 30 years and 7 percent interest. For households earning between $28,901 and $36,080, and households with two or more people earning not more than $45,045, the mortgage term is 30 years at 7.75 percent.
Applicants should contact a participating lender in the county, Lenders will provide all necessary information and application forms.
To participate in programs, borrowers must have a signed contractof sale on a qualifying home before applying for a mortgage loan.
