Comic's humor boosts disabilities awareness

The message of Disabilities Awareness Day will be bolstered with laughter when stand-up comic Kathy Buckley visits the campus of Anne Arundel Community College on Nov. 5.

Ms. Buckley, who has appeared on national television and at the Kennedy Center in Washington, is hearing-impaired and draws on her experiences to drive home her point.

"There's only one disability in the whole world," she tells her audiences, "and that is your attitude."

As a child, Ms. Buckley was considered mentally retarded until it was discovered she was deaf. She worked 15 years to learn how to talk. She reads lips and wears a hearing aid.

As a child, she was fascinated by the mime routines of comedian Red Skelton.

"I got involved in comedy because laughter is the best medicine in healing," she says.

That theory has been tested. She has twice battled cancer and used a wheelchair for two years after she was run over by a Jeep.

In addition to her stand-up act, the blunt-talking comic is a motivational speaker and actress.

Her free show, sponsored by the Student Association and the Challenged Student Union, will be on the stage of the Pascal Center for Performing Arts at 12:30 p.m. The show is open to the public.
