FC Columbia falls in tourney
The FC Columbia under-13 premier boys soccer team lost to rival Richmond, 3-2, on a goal in the final two minutes of play that eliminated it from the Virginia Beach Columbus Day Tournament.
Columbia scored a 2-0 win over the Kernersville (N.C.) Comets and a 1-0 win over the Delaware state champion Strikers to advance to the quarterfinal round.
There, they got goals from Chris O'Shea and Stuart Kessler, with Eric Folkemer picking up an assist. Although FC needed only a tie to advance to the semifinals, it was unable to hold off the Strikers in the final moments of the game.
* 12-13: Division leaders King's Contrivance No. 2 and Oakland Mills each recorded shutouts Saturday to remain undefeated in the Soccer Association of Columbia neighborhood league.
David Acott and David Packer each scored a goal to lead A Division leader King's Contrivance No. 2 to a 2-0 win over Centennial No. 2.
Second-place Hickory Ridge kept pace with a 3-1 win over Centennial No. 1, as Matt Russell, Saah Solee and Rob Ridgely scored for the victors.
In the B1 Division, Oakland Mills got a hat trick from Jason Gruber en route to a 4-0 win over Centennial.
Second-place Wilde Choice defeated Owen Brown, 4-3, on two goals from Brett Johnson and one apiece from Chris Scotti and Mark Taylor.
Hickory Ridge had a five-goal outburst in the second half to defeat Long Reach, 5-0. Andy Fitzgibbon scored twice, and Mike Beckman, Robbie Warren and Matt Kensinger each scored once.
Centennial No. 1 got first-half goals from Danny Schneider and Neil Fenwick, and Wilde Choice answered with scores from Chris Van Swol and Jamie Anderson as the teams played to a 2-2 tie.
The other team in the title hunt, Centennial No. 2, moved to within a point of first place with a 2-0 win over King's Contrivance, as Josh Hummel and Mike Huppman scored.
* 11: The top two teams scored victories last weekend in the Soccer Association of Columbia neighborhood league.
Front-runner King's Contrivance got two goals from Josh Zabka and one apiece from Morgan Epperly, Tayseer Chowdhry and Marc Lazaroksky in a 5-0 win over Centennial No. 2.
Second-pace Hickory Ridge kept pace with a 2-0 win over Oakland Mills on goals from Danny Rapp and Carl Szabo.
In the B Division, first-place Owen Brown got a goal from Omar Nappier en route to a 1-0 win over second-place Hickory Ridge. Mike Barth, William Gray and Blake Thornton played well for Owen Brown, while Michael Thomas and Carl Marshall led the way for Hickory Ridge.
The other game saw fifth-place Wilde Choice surprise Centennial No. 2, 3-1. Matt Daddio, Ray Cheong and Matt Farragut scored for the victors, while Michael Heffner, Michael Thomas and Carl Marshall played well for Centennial.
Girls soccer
* Under 12: The Columbia Cannonade continued their dominance in the Washington Area Girls Soccer League with a 2-0 win over the Gunston Shooting Stars to improve to 5-0-1.
Alexia Vogler and Megan Moulding each had goals in the second half.
* Under 14 1/2 : The Columbia Cougars lost three games against top competition in the recent Washington Area Girls Soccer League Tournament.
The Cougars suffered a 2-0 loss to the Eastern Regional champion Braddock Road Lightning, a 4-0 loss to the Texas Longhorns and a 1-0 loss to the Wilton, Conn. Classic.
* 12-13: Goals by Meredith Price and Cindy Echevarria paced league-leading Centennial No. 2 to a 2-0 win over Centennial No. 3 Saturday in Soccer Association of Columbia neighborhood play. Stopper Erin O'Connor and sweepers Kelly Collins and Jessica Kiracofe also played well for No. 2 (4-0).
Keeping pace at 3-0-1 were King's Contrivance No. 2, a 4-0 winner over Centennial No. 1, and Hickory Ridge, a 2-0 victor over Wilde Choice No. 1.
* 11: Jenny Jones scored a hat trick to pace league-leading King's Contrivance No. 1 to a 3-0 win over Centennial No. 1 in Soccer Association of Columbia neighborhood soccer last weekend.
Karla Green, Megan Hartman and Lauren Traber played strong defense for the winners.
Second-place Centennial No. 2 and third-place King's Contrivance No. 2 each scored victories to keep pace in the division. Soon Ei Sweeney and Leigh Tillman each scored two goals to pace Centennial to a 4-0 win over Wilde Choice, while Kelly Workman scored twice and Stephanie Waters added another as King's Contrivance No. 2 defeated Hickory Ridge, 3-2.
Softball
A number of divisional champions have been crowned in the Howard County Recreation Fall Softball League.
Three Wines Tavern, Appleschmidts Pub, Mike's Trian House, Graphic Concepts, JB's Road Warriors, Nu-Homes, the Barracudas, Smooth Characters, Md. and Va. Milk Producers, No Names (Thurs. III) and Chapelgate wrapped up first-place finishes in their divisions.
Volleyball
In the A Division of the Howard County Recreation and Parks Adult Volleyball League the battle for first is between the Jackalopes (17-4) and TTGBITN (16-5).
The only undefeated team is in the B Division, where Elk, Bakers Revenge stands at 18-0. Flesheaters continues to chase at 17-4.
In the C Division, Foul Play leads the pack at 16-2, followed by the Sunday Spikers and Chain Gang, both 15-5.
