SHA starts synchronizing traffic lights along U.S. 1
The State Highway Administration has begun work to synchronize traffic signals at several intersections along U.S. 1 in Howard and Prince George's counties.
The traffic signals currently operate independently, creating traffic flow problems for motorists.
State highway workers will install a cable that will allow the signals to operate as a single unit.
The synchronization will help to improve traffic flow on three miles of U.S. 1 from Contee Road to North Laurel Road, highway officials said.
Intermittent single-lane closures will occur during non-peak traffic hours, and steel plates will cover construction areas to allow motorists to pass.
The project is scheduled for completion next spring.
