Macmillan sets AACC record

Anne Arundel Community College freshman cross country runner Janine Macmillan established a women's school record in a 5-kilometer race (3.1 miles) Saturday at Salisbury State Park.

Macmillan, a Chesapeake High graduate, finished in 19 minutes, 28 seconds in the Salisbury Tidewater Invitational. The previous record was 19:42, set by Sari Hemenringiem, a Danish exchange student, in 1984.

"I knew she could set the record the first time I watched her run," said Anne Arundel coach Jim Fontaine.

"We're real pleased with Janine this year. She's run seven meets so far and she's been first among the [junior college] finishers each time."

Macmillan's time last weekend was about two minutes faster than her previous best. Because of her asthma, she figured her times would improve once the weather cooled.

"A lot of the races have been real hot and humid," she said. "I kept telling everyone, 'Wait for a cool day.'

"I've known about the record since the beginning of the season, and that's been a goal of mine."
