Pugsley takes a flier on Columbus Chase and wins

The area's premier runners may be less than overjoyed, bu there's a new name on the running scene.

Ray Pugsley entered the Howard County Striders' Columbus Chase 10K somewhat by accident, but his future moves figure to be more determined.

Pugsley, who ran track and cross country at Dartmouth College, is a graduate student in hydro geology at Johns Hopkins University. While he was settling into his apartment here last month, he learned of the Columbus Chase by chance.

"At the apartment where I live, I got some mail for someone who used to live here," Pugsley, 23, said last week. "We get a lot of mail for a lot of people who used to live here, but one of the things that came was a flier for the race. I looked at it and decided to go over and run."

Pugsley entered the morning of the race and came away with an 18-second victory over Brad Uhlfelder.

The surprise to Uhlfelder and the other top finishers should be softened by Pugsley's credentials, although most of them are not based on the roads. This summer, he got to the semifinals of the steeplechase in the U.S. Olympic Track and Field trials. He has placed 10th in that event in the NCAA championships. And in the summer of 1991, he was ninth in the steeplechase at the World University Games in England.

As for his plans, Pugsley said: "I just make a point of going out and running every day. For eight years, I've had a routine. As long as I keep doing it, it'll be easy to keep running. I'll be looking for more races to enter."

Seaside update

Bill Rodgers, Dr. George Sheehan and Steve Spence will be running in the Seaside 10-Mile Run on Saturday at Ocean City, as well as appearing at a race clinic on Friday from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Ocean City Convention Center.

Top male runners in the race include Chris Fox, Brian Ferrari, Kevin Ruch, Doug Mock, Jim Hage and Dave Berardi. Top female runners are Maria Pazarentzos and Maureen Hall.

Can Olympic marathoner Spence beat Fox? Will Spence just be running through the Seaside race?

"Spence never just runs through a race," race director Les Kiniosaid last week.
