Chief of 911 center reported terminated
Paul N. Hajek, chief of the county's 911 communications center who was placed on administrative leave last week, has been fired effective today, according to a county administrator.
Raquel Sanudo, the county's chief administrative officer, said she could not discuss Mr. Hajek's termination.
"That's a personnel matter, and I can't discuss personnel matters," she said. His supervisor, Rebecca Horvath, also refused to discuss Mr. Hajek's firing, which comes one week after he was placed on administrative leave for undisclosed reasons. Ms. Horvath is director of the county's Department of General Services, which oversees the year-old Bureau of Central Communications.
The bureau speeds up emergency response time by freeing police and firefighters from non-serious calls.
Mr. Hajek, who retired last year as a lieutenant with the county police department, couldn't be reached for comment.
Board OKs home care for terminally ill
The county Board of Health has given two health organizations the go-ahead to provide home hospice care for terminally ill residents in the county.
The board's go-ahead is the first step in allowing Towson-based Greater Baltimore Medical Center and Baltimore-based Bay Area Health Care to provide in-home support and health services.
Hospice Services of Howard County and Visiting Nurses Association, non-profit organizations, provide such services in Howard County. However, Kathleen Reilly, nurse coordinator for Hospice Services, says there's a need for more in-patient beds.
GBMC proposes to expand its home care services and build a 12-bed hospice center near its hospital in Towson.
"We're offering something that's not offered in the state, a free-standing hospice facility," said David Brond, GBMC's marketing and planning director.
Construction on the estimated $4.2 million hospice center is expected to begin next year.
Bay Area Health Care's goal is to provide hospice services to the University of Maryland Hospital's cancer patients, but it also will accept outside patients.
