Group begins planning for two street projects CENTRAL Union Mills * Westminster * Sandymount * Finksburg

A group of Westminster area residents and State Highway Administration officials has started planning for two reconstruction projects on Pennsylvania Avenue.

One project is tentatively set to begin in 1994. The other is budgeted only for design studies.

A task force made up of city residents and SHA officials conducted its first meeting Tuesday night on reconstruction plans for Pennsylvania Avenue from Union Street to Sullivan Avenue, and West Main Street from Pennsylvania Avenue to Route 31.

Work on Pennsylvania Avenue is scheduled to begin after the highway administration completes work on East Main Street. That probably will be in about 18 months to two years, said Amy Noji of Whitney, Bailey, Cox & Magnani, an engineering consulting firm that works for the city and state.

The West Main Street work is currently budgeted only for design by the state, Ms. Noji said.

Tree preservation is likely to be a top priority for residents, said Dean Camlin, a local architect and task force member. He said residents will want to see "protection of the old trees as much as possible."

The task force decided Tuesday to take a walking tour of the streets next month.
