McDonough scores again for St. Mary's in 1-1 tie

St. Mary's girls soccer team seems to rely on Mo McDonough to make the passes, score the goals and lead the team to victories.

McDonough, who has been the team leader for the Saints, registering eight goals and five assists, scored their goal in yesterday's 1-1 tie with Catholic at Herring Run Park and also in Monday's 1-1 tie with John Carroll.

St. Mary's coach Jerry Tobin said that until his squad plays as a team and stop relying on one player, the seventh-ranked Saints will continue to struggle.

"She [McDonough] can't do everything herself," Tobin said. "She needs help. 'When in doubt, give the ball to Mo.' That seems to be the mentality going on. Until we smarten up as a team, then we are not going to win a majority of our games and be successful."

The Saints haven't been winning a majority of their games recently. After starting the season with three wins, St. Mary's has one victory in its past six games. With yesterday's loss, the Saints dropped to 4-3-2 overall and 1-2-3 in the Catholic League A Division. Catholic remains in the basement of the conference with a 0-4-2 mark, 4-5-2 overall.

Tobin said the Saints are "searching for answers. We will see if we can figure it out, but the season is getting shorter."

Catholic's Marie Marrow rifled a shot past St. Mary's goaltender Erin Hon at the 11:00 mark, putting the Cubs ahead 1-0.

McDonough tied it 1-1 when she got an unassisted goal at the 37-minute mark of the first half.

In the second half, both squads had chances to win in the final minutes. McDonough's direct shot with five minutes remaining was stopped by goaltender Jessica Paugh, and Catholic let a ball on a throw-in roll right to Hon with less than a minute to go.
