Landfill cleanup tops board's agenda
The cleanup of the former Glen Burnie Landfill will be among the topics discussed by a new citizens' advisory board when it meets for the first time tomorrow night.
Thomas H. Neel, county Department of Utilities director, will appoint the 12-member panel to keep residents informed about efforts to keep pollutants from leaving the 130-acre landfill, which the county operated between 1970 and 1982, utilities spokeswoman Jody Vollmar said.
Richard Waesche, a county engineer, will explain how the landfill came to be contaminated and discuss plans to cover the landfill with clay to keep rain from washing pollutants from the trash into the ground water.
The panel also will make recommendations about the day-to-day operation of the county's convenience center, which accepts trash and recyclables, at the Dover Road site, Ms. Vollmar said.
The center is open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Although many people have expressed interest in the topic, only two Glen Burnie residents -- Mary Rosso of the Silver Sands neighborhood and Lois Kyle of Point Pleasant -- have confirmed their participation, Ms. Vollmar said.
Anyone who wants to volunteer for the committee should attend the 7 p.m. meeting in Room 404 of the Arundel Center North on Baltimore and Annapolis Boulevard.
Man faces charges after marijuana found
A man was charged with possession of marijuana after police said they caught him with the drug Friday at the Harundale Texaco station on Aquahart Road.
According to the police report, an officer on patrol saw a car on the parking lot at 2:30 a.m. and began talking to the man inside. The officer saw drug paraphernalia in the ash tray of the car and then searched the driver, finding a small bag of marijuana in the man's pocket, the police report said.
Edward Leroy Scarlett, 27, of the 600 block of C St., in Pasadena, was taken to Northern District station to be charged, police said.
Waiting room tepee reported stolen
A child's tepee that was set up in a waiting room at North Arundel Hospital was reported stolen Wednesday, county police said. The tent was for children who were waiting in the hospital, and was reported missing at 1:47 a.m.

* Glen Burnie Park:A home in the 500 block of East Park Court was broken into Tuesday and $400 was taken.
* Southgate:A home in the 7900 block of Castle Hedge Dell was broken into Wednesday. Jewelry and appliances valued at $1,954 were taken.
