Name: Patrick Cronyn, 17, of Annapolis

School: St. Mary's High of Annapolis

Achievements: Last year, Patrick was nominated to the Maryland Distinguished Scholarship Program for his work in visual arts. He received an honorable mention. Patrick balances active memberships in the school's Art Club, Environmental Club and Math Club with advanced college prep courses at school, a part-time job at a local video store and an active sports career. He plays "wing forward" on the basketball team ("a half-guard, half-forward type of position") and has played split end, free safety and punter on the football team. Patrick also maintains a 4.0 grade-point average. He served an internship last summer at the David Taylor Research Center in Annapolis, and is a former volunteer with Habitat for Humanity. Patrick has also been mentioned in the annual "Who's Who In American High School Students" for the past two years. Other interests include scuba diving, flying and following his father and brother into a career as a naval officer.

Goals: "I want to become a naval officer through the Naval Academy. I plan to major in aerospace [studies] or maybe systems engineering and then become a pilot. But if that doesn't work out, I'd still be perfectly happy just being a career naval officer."

Comments: "My brother goes to the Naval Academy, and a lot of his friends come over here. I've met a lot of mids and I know how dedicated they are. I know how hard it [the academy] is, so I try to keep prepared by doing as many challenging things as possible. I enjoy a challenge, because doing something difficult forces you to put something extra into it. And the more you put into something, the more you get out of it."
