Second annual D.A.R.E. Bike-A-Thon scheduled NORTH COUNTY -- Linthicum * Ferndale * Brooklyn Park * Pumphrey


Looking for something interesting to do on a Sunday afternoon? Why not attend the second annual Anne Arundel County Police Department D.A.R.E. Officer's Bike-A-Thon? The event begins at noon Sunday at the B & A Trail at Route 50 and Winchester Road, and ends 13 miles later at the Glen Burnie Improvement Association.

D.A.R.E. officers will answer questions concerning the program. Free hot dogs and sodas will be given at the end of the trail. D.A.R.E. students and alumni can participate. Don't forget to wear your D.A.R.E. T-shirts.

Information in last week's column on the Giant grocery store's cash register receipts program contained an error. Giant will accept yellow receipts collected between Oct. 1, 1992, and March 6, 1993.


Belle Grove Elementary School news: Plan to attend the PTA Executive Board meeting at 6 p.m. tomorrow, followed by a general PTA meeting at 7 p.m. Guidance counselor Janice Tourre is the guest speaker. A Parent Workshop is also planned. Helpful hints on homework, chores and timeout skills for children will be discussed.


Brooklyn Park Elementary School news: Vision and hearing tests are scheduled for Thursday and Friday. Kindergartners, third-graders and new students will be tested.

* Kindergartners will visit Larriland Farm today to choose their Halloween pumpkins.

* There will be no morning or afternoon kindergarten on Wednesday.

Park Elementary School news: There will be no E.C.I., pre-kindergarten or kindergarten classes on Wednesday.

Brooklyn Park/Lindale Middle Junior High School news: Don't forget to turn in your Corbi Pizza order forms on Wednesday.

North County High School news: Last summer, German teacher Maureen Helinski and nine students traveled to Freiburg, Germany. The students lived with German families and attended classes at a German high school. This week through Nov. 11, 21 German students and two teachers will stay with North County families. They will visit such famous places as Washington and Williamsburg. We welcome them.

All public school students will be dismissed two hours early on Wednesday for teachers in-service day.


The Belle Grove Improvement Association will meet at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Belle Grove Elementary School multipurpose room. Capt. Gary Barr, of the county police department's Northern District, will be the guest speaker.

New members are always welcome to join the association.


The Sons of the American Legion Squadron Post 34, 5526 Belle Grove Road, will sponsor a Halloween dance from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Oct. 31. Live music will be provided by Touche.

Tickets are $10 per person and include a platter, setups and beer. Costumes are optional, but prizes will be awarded for the best costumes. For tickets or more information, call 789-9682.

Harbor Hospital Center news: The center is seeking volunteers to assist the nursing staff in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit waiting room. Duties include updating families on patients' conditions, restocking nursing supplies and assisting at the nursing station. Four-hour shifts are available between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. seven days a week. For more information, call 347-3478.


Do you enjoy walking? Why not join the Crop Walk sponsored by the Ministerial Alliance of Brooklyn-Curtis Bay? The walk will begin between 12:30 p.m. and 1 p.m. at St. John Lutheran Church, Third Street and Washburn Avenue. Participants walk 5 kilometers, returning to the church. If you can't walk, show your support by sponsoring someone who is walking. Proceeds will benefit the community's needy.


If you have registered for the Boating Skills and Seamanship Course, presented by the Coast Guard Auxiliary, Magothy River Flotilla 18, don't forget that it's scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Providence Center in Arnold.


Do your pets receive rabies shots? The Anne Arundel County Department of Health is sponsoring a vaccination clinic from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday at the Arundel Center North, Crain Highway in Glen Burnie.

There is a $5 donation.
