Oakland Mills house fire under investigation

The State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating a one-alarm fire that caused $30,000 in damage to an Oakland Mills home last week.

At about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, a fire ignited in a second-floor bedroom in a house in the 9400 block of Kilimanjaro Road, said Battalion Chief Donald R. Howell, the county's fire and rescue services spokesman.

The fire burned out the bedroom and part of the hallway, Mr. Howell said. Heavy smoke damaged the second floor, and moderate smoke and water damaged the first floor, Mr. Howell said.

The residents, Joanne Partee, 41, and Chris Partee, 15, were uninjured. They are staying with family in Bethesda.

The fire caused $15,000 in damage to the structure and $15,000 to the contents, Mr. Howell said.

Twenty-five personnel from 11 surrounding fire stations responded to the fire.

Kings Contrivance has 'presidential debate'

The Kings Contrivance Village Board will host a mock "Presidential Candidates" Debate at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Amherst House.

Jim Kraft of the Howard County Democratic Central Committee will represent Gov. Bill Clinton, the Democratic presidential candidate.

President George Bush, the Republican nominee, will be represented by State Delegate Marty Madden.

Each representative will make a brief presentation on behalf of his candidate before taking questions from the audience. The evening will close with a straw poll.
