Terps defend state cross country title


The University of Maryland successfully defended its men's title and the Naval Academy women dominated their competition in the Maryland State Cross Country Championships yesterday at UMBC.

Bernard Kitur of Mount St. Mary's won the five-mile men's race in 26:17 followed by Coppin State's Nicholas Eugene in 26:40. But the Terps placed runners in fourth, sixth and seventh places and beat second-place Frostburg State by 32 points.

Navy's Kerry O'Neill won the women's race, covering 5,000 meters in 18:50. Teammate Michelle Montgomery was second 10 seconds later and Navy placed five in the top 10 overall for 24 points.

Field hockey

Michelle Mohlman scored two goals to lead Goucher College (5-6) over Vassar College, 2-0, in the semi-final game of the Wells College Invitational in Aurora, N.Y. Goucher meets Wells College in the final today.

* Mimi Young scored two goals to lead Franklin & Marshall (8-2) over visiting Johns Hopkins (7-3), 4-1. The game was a battle for second place in the MAC Southwest Division, with the winner, Franklin & Marshall, making the playoffs.

* Edie Matthews and Kristen Guttilla each scored, as Salisbury State (7-3-1) defeated host Kutztown, 2-1.
