Severna Park woman, 61, coming of age Wins four medals in running events SENIOR OLYMPICS

Yvonne Aasen of Severna Park says she and her dog, Cooper start each morning with a two-mile jog. On training days, however, she leaves the dog at home.

"The dog's not a serious runner," laughed Aasen, 61.

Aasen, a housewife turned champion long-distance runner, is outrunning a lot of people and animals alike these days. At yesterday's final day at the Maryland Senior Olympics at Towson State University, Aasen won an age-group (60-64) gold medal in the 10K and a silver in the 1,500 to go along with her earlier medals in the 5K and 800.

Over 1,650 seniors, ages 55-95, competed in the three-day competition that featured 55 events, ranging from billiards to pole vaulting.

Although many competitors were lifelong athletes, some like Aasen, turned to sports at an advanced age. Aasen said she took up jogging at age 46 after her husband, Marvin, suffered a heart attack.

"It was something I always wanted to do," said Aasen. "When I started running a few yards at a time, my legs were so weak I felt like I was going to fall down."

But she stuck with it, gradually building her endurance to the point where she can now run up to 10 miles. On Thursday, she was the only woman to participate in the ceremonial torch run, carrying it 1.4 miles as part of the Annapolis-Towson contingent.

In yesterday's 10K, her winning time of 57 minutes, 28 seconds was a 2-minute improvement over last year, and would've beaten some in the men's 55-59 age group.

"I feel wonderful," she said. "I feel better now than when I was 30 . . . because I exercise. It just puts a spring in your step."

Running in her final event, the 1,500, Aasen's spring was quite evident. Though starting in the middle of the pack, she worked her way through the field, looking stronger as the race progressed. With her family, including 2-week old granddaughter Morgan, watching from the stands, she came on to finish second her age group, fifth overall.

Some of the many other multiple winners on the women's side included Helen Boyd (55-59) in the shot put and discus; Dorothy Brill (65-69) in the 100, 400 and 800; Kathleen Morrison (65-69) in the long jump and 1,500; Helen Cunningham (70-74) in the shot put and discus and Angela Witt (80-84) in the long jump and discus.
