Randolph-Macon runs past Western Md., 48-30


ASHLAND, Va. -- Randolph-Macon scored the first 28 points of the game, held off a Western Maryland rally and went on to spill the Green Terrors from the unbeaten ranks, 48-30, at Day Field yesterday.

Western Maryland (4-1) closed to 31-24 with 14:30 left, but the Yellow Jackets answered with a 70-yard scoring drive in nine plays, capped by a 20-yard touchdown pass to David Hughes.

Kerrell Bryant, who scored three touchdowns, then broke away on an 82-yard scoring run to put the Green Terrors out of the game.

Division III rushing leader Rob Johnson accounted for 177 of Western Maryland's net yardage on the ground, but the team's frustrations continued at Randolph-Macon, where its previous two trips resulted in a tie and a one-point loss.

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa.-- An interception by sophomore cornerback Chad Van Den Berg set up Johns Hopkins' (3-2, 2-1) game-winning drive, then Van Den Berg intercepted the conversion pass by Ursinus quarterback Brian LaFond with no time left on the clock to preserve the Blue Jays' Centennial Football Conference victory.

Joe Richards caught seven passes for 79 yards and Mike Bopp went 13-for-22 for 174 yards and two touchdowns and ran for two more for Hopkins.

SALISBURY -- Calvin Easley scored a school-record four touchdowns, pacing the No. 2 ranked team in the East Region of the NCAA Division III past Salisbury (2-3).

The Sea Gulls tried to counter with a whirlwind passing attack with Len Annetta setting school records for attempts and completions and Charlie Whalen making 14 receptions, another Salisbury mark.
