GOP official campaigns for Bush at Octoberfest

The former Veterans Affairs secretary was spinning the ethnic wheel for the Bush-Quayle ticket yesterday: meeting with business owners in Little Italy, Lithuanians in Washington, Greeks in New York and Baltimore's German community celebrating Octoberfest at the Fifth Regiment Armory.

Edward J. Derwinski was escorted to the armory by U.S. Rep. Helen Delich Bentley, R-2nd. Mr. Derwinski stepped down from his Cabinet post last month to work in the Bush campaign as liaison to the country's ethnic groups.

As an oompah band played the 65-year-old Mr. Derwinski said: "Maryland is an important state and Baltimore is an ethnic city in the classic sense, a good place for us to work together. We're here on a grass-roots political level. No speeches, just meeting -- with people, that's the American democracy."

Man leaps from window to escape fire in house

A man jumped from a second-floor window of his Whitelock Street home to escape a fire early yesterday and suffered burns and several broken bones.

The man, James West, 48, of the 1100 block of Whitelock Street, suffered a broken leg and ribs, second-degree burns on his back and smoke inhalation.

The one-alarm blaze, which broke out about 4 a.m. in a first-floor room, was confined to that room, fire officials said. Mr. West was asleep in a second-floor bedroom with his wife, Yvonne, 53, when the fire broke out. She was unharmed.

Mr. West was taken to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he was listed in stable condition.

Fire department investigators classified the fire as suspicious.
