score in the most conventional manner yesterday, but the Patriots weren't apologizing for what coach Bruce Sponsler called "our biggest win."

Junior forward Carrie Klimes was credited for the first goal, which came off a Lisa Gallicchio corner kick at 16 minutes, 35 seconds of the opening half. No. 5 Old Mill would need in a 2-0 win over No. 13 Broadneck.

Senior forward Michelle Salmon added her team-leading seventh goal after a pushing call placed the ball 12 yards out. She lined a shot to the left of Broadneck keeper Tara Jensen, sealing Broadneck's third loss of the season.

A veteran defensive unit led by senior fullback Lori Lynch and junior keeper Jackie Bardelli posted its fourth shutout yesterday. Old Mill has outscored its opponents, 29-2.

Broadneck (4-3) came close to breaking through twice in the first half. Becky Holmes took a shot from 35 yards out that barely floated outside the right post, and Amy Adams' direct kick from the same distance sailed over the crossbar.

Later in the half, after Klimes had been awarded her sixth goal of the year, Broadneck's Jessica Hull pushed the ball ahead to Holmes on the right wing. Bardelli charged out and forced Holmes to rush a shot that went wide right.

Broadneck looked poised to score the tying goal early in the second half, when Hull got beyond the first wave of defenders. But Lynch pressured her into taking a weak shot that Bardelli easily scooped up.

"Bruce and I both know that if you have three losses, you better not get No. 4 or you're not going to get into the playoffs," said Bruins coach David Lord, "So, we basically have to win the rest of our games."
