Taneytown man struck by car after stepping onto highway

A 20-year-old Taneytown man was at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center last night after being hit by a car on Route 140 near Route 31 in Westminster around 4 p.m. His condition was unknown early yesterday evening.

Witnesses told police that Brian T. Keith, of the 4700 block of Ruggles Road, was walking along the south side of Route 140 when he stepped into the path of a 1982 brown Mercury Cougar driven by Ronald L. Evans, 30, of the 1100 block of Wesley Road in Finksburg, according to a Westminster police news release.

Mr. Evans was driving east on Route 140 and swerved to the left, but was unable to avoid hitting Mr. Keith, police said.

Witnesses said Mr. Evans was not speeding when the accident occurred, police reported.

Mr. Evans was alone in the car and was not injured, police said. The top corner on the passenger side of the windshield was cracked from the impact, and the passenger door and molding (( also were damaged.

No charges were filed against Mr. Evans, investigating officer Misty Runkles said.

The crew of a Taneytown Volunteer Fire Department ambulance that happened on the scene just after the accident was treating Mr. Keith when police arrived.

He later was transported to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center by a state police MedEvac helicopter.

With help from State Highway Administration staff, Westminster police blocked traffic on Route 31 for a short time to allow the helicopter to land.
