Well-read students kick off a parade
Students who read for a few hours each week last summer will be guests of honor Monday at a parade and celebration at Chesapeake Bay Middle School.
The governor's Maryland You Are Beautiful float, the Chesapeake High School band, cheerleaders and elected officials will lead the noon parade from the middle school to the high school stadium, organizers said.
For the marchers' safety, Mountain Road will be closed from noon to 12:30 p.m. between the exit at the high school and Ventnor Road.
An awards ceremony begins at 12:30 p.m.
More than 140 students participated in the Maryland Student Literacy Corps' "Go for the Gold and Roar" summer reading program.
About 80 students will receive gold medals for reading for at least 120 hours, or 15 hours per week, during the eight-week program.
Forty students will receive silver medals for reading at least 8 hours a week; another 40 will receive bronze awards for reading at least three hours a week.
Parents and guests are invited. Parking is available at the lower parking lot at the exit of Chesapeake High School.
For more information, call the school at 437-2400.
