A restaurant nestled in the heart of Taylorsville has a way of raising money for Carroll County's Special Olympics that is fun for participants, spectators and the people who donate their time to it.
The 11-year tradition of Rewster's Doubles Horseshoe Tournament will continue Saturday at the Winfield Fire Hall on West Old Liberty Road in Winfield. The all-day event begins with registration time at 8 a.m. and an official start at 9 a.m., said Rewster's Restaurant manager Doug Henley.
Tournament matches will be double elimination, best two out of three games.
Proceeds will go to the Special Olympics, said Mr. Henley. "Last year we brought in $1,900," he said about the 1991 fund-raiser. "Over the course of time, it's been in excess of $20,000," he said.
"Rewster's is the single largest annual contributor to Carroll County Special Olympics," said area director Marsha Barger, who expects to attend Saturday's tournament as a spectator.
"They have great food and it's a fun event," she said.
Ms. Barger said tournament proceeds help the Special Olympics pay for uniforms, transportation, and medals for the local track and field event in April.
About 140 developmentally disabled county residents participate in Special Olympics activities during the year.
The success of Rewster's Annual Horseshoe Tournament is made possible by a several groups working together, Mr. Henley said.
Bees Distributing, Inc. supplies trophies and the beer that will be sold for donations at the tourney. Rewster's Restaurant donates a major portion of the food, which will include pit beef, ham and sausage sandwiches.
Volunteers from Rewster's, Bees Distributing and the Woodbine Recreation Council make up the work force for the event, Mr. Henley said.
