Dell appointed to NACo panel on ag, rural affairs

Commissioner President Donald I. Dell has been named a member of the National Association of Counties' Agriculture and Rural Affairs Steering Committee.

NACo's 12 steering committees each have 50 to 60 members who meet to examine issues critical to local government. Their recommendations are presented at an annual NACo conference, and if approved become part of the "American County Platform" which is used to lobby Congress and the White House.

Mr. Dell, a Republican, operates a dairy and grain farm outside Westminster with his family.

Shooting range site weighed by county

The county commissioners yesterday asked Recreation and Parks Department Director John Little to look for other sites for a public shooting range while keeping the Hoods Mill Landfill site as an option.

Commissioners Elmer C. Lippy and Donald I. Dell said they would prefer a shooting range to be in another location. South Carroll residents have opposed a shooting range in their area. The county Recreation and Parks Board agreed last month to work with area sportsmen to explore potential sites.

Marriage licenses may rise to $35

County commissioners may raise the marriage license fee from $25 to $35 and earmark the $10,000 to $12,000 it would raise for the county's battered spouse program.

The program lost 30 percent of its funding, about $11,000, in budget cuts this year, County Budget Director Steven D. Powell said yesterday.

The state dictates that the most a county may charge for a marriage license is $35, he said.
