Strike up the band! Republican Wayne T. Gilcrest and Democrat Tom McMillen will take the floor in a candidates forum Oct. 8 at Anne Arundel Community College.

The Greater Severna Park Council, the Lower Broadneck Federation and the Anne Arundel County Trade Council are sponsoring the public political forum for the candidates whose districts cover Severna Park: Both men are incumbents seeking to represent the newly drawn 1st Congressional District.

The forum, to be moderated by college president Thomas Florestano, will begin at 8 p.m. in the Pascal Auditorium at Anne Arundel Community College.

The candidates will be asked prepared questions geared to issues of interest to residents of the Broadneck peninsula, and will have four minutes each to answer, followed by a one-minute conclusion.

Man tries to take student's purse

An 18-year-old community college student told police someone tried to snatch her purse when she walked into the bathroom at the college's Career Center Tuesday.

According to the police report, Jennifer Ann Sheets, said she had walked into the women's bathroom on the second floor at 1:50 p.m., when a man grabbed her purse strap and broke it. She refused to let go of the purse, and the robber pushed her against the wall and ran out of the bathroom.

Police described the robber as a black man about 5-foot-7 and in his early 20s. He had short hair and was wearing a purple sweat shirt, white sneakers and a gold watch.

Man reaches in car, grabs woman's hair

County police were looking for a man who reached into a woman's car through her sunroof while she was at Cape St. Claire Road and College Parkway last Thursday.

According to the police report, the man reached through the sunroof of the woman's 1991 Toyota Corolla and grabbed her hair. The man let go of her hair when she hit the accelerator, drove through the red light and hit the curb.

Police descripted the man as white, slender, about 30, and wearing dirty clothes.
