The Johns Hopkins University Office of Special Events will sponsor an all-day bus trip Oct. 3 that will give participants a chance to explore the 18th and 19th century architecture and interiors of Dickeyville.
The bus trip will include a visit to the oldest residence in the New England-style village, which was established in 1719. Visitors will also see a sculptor's studio, church and additional 19th century houses.
The bus will leave Hopkins' Homewood campus at 3400 N. Charles St. at 10 a.m. and return between 3 p.m. and 3:45 p.m. Tickets cost $40 per person and include lunch. More information is available from Hopkins' Office of Special Events at 516-7157.
Homewood and Evergreen House, the historic houses of the Johns Hopkins University, will jointly sponsor a symposium on the influence of classicism on 19th century American architecture, decorative arts and landscaping. The daylong program will be held Wednesday at Evergreen House, 4545 N. Charles St.
Speakers will include Wendell Garrett, editor-at-large and publisher of The Magazine Antiques and senior vice president and director of museum services for Sotheby's in New York; Elisabeth Donaghy Garrett, director of Sotheby's Educational Studies Department and author of At Home: The American Family 1750-1870; and Eleanor C. Weller, co-author of The Golden Age of American Gardens.
Registration will begin Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. A fee of $40 per person ($35 for Evergreen House members), covers the lectures, morning coffee, lunch and afternoon tea. For more information call 516-0341.
The Signature Group, a Baltimore-based firm that owns and manages apartments, has acquired a 50 percent interest in The Sailcloth Factory, a 105-unit apartment complex near Martin Luther King Boulevard and Pratt Street.
The loft building and one-time warehouse for the now-defunct Hutzler Bros. department store chain was converted to apartments several years ago by Hutzler Historic Associates, an affiliate of Historic Landmarks for Living of Philadelphia. Historic Landmarks continues to own half of the project, but Signature Group has taken control of management and leasing.
According to President Joe Fonte, Signature owns and/or manages 1,300 apartments in the Baltimore area, including those at Tindeco Wharf in Canton, the GreeneHouse in the loft district, TC Harbor Hill near Federal Hill and Carriage Hill Village in suburban Baltimore.
Inner Harbor East
Amos & Bailey Ltd., a Baltimore-based architecture firm, is the architect of record for Marina House, the first building planned for construction as part of the 20-acre Inner Harbor East community between the Inner Harbor and Fells Point.
The 6,800-square-foot building has been designed to serve the users of a 204-slip marina that is being constructed as part of the community, which also will include housing, offices and a hotel. Expected to start construction this fall, the building will contain dressing areas and lockers for boaters, offices for people who oversee operations of the marina and a restaurant.
An operator is being sought by the development team, a joint venture of Gilbane Properties and John Paterakis. Amos & Bailey is working closely with Ehrenkrantz & Eckstut of New York, master planners for the community, and is also working on designs for some of the project's public spaces.
"Architects' Sketchbooks" is the title of an exhibit that will run from Oct. 1 to Oct. 30 at the Gallery of the Baltimore chapter of the American Institute of Architects, 11 1/2 W. Chase St. The exhibit will feature sketches by area architects, interns and architecture students.
