Public schools in two Baltimore area jurisdictions open their doors to students today, one will open tomorrow, and the rest will wait for Labor Day.

The reason for the unusual variety of opening dates is that Labor Day is late this year -- Sept. 7 -- and the school systems had to choose between starting early or ending the school year late in June.

Metropolitan area schools open on the following dates:

* Anne Arundel County: today.

* Baltimore City: tomorrow.

* Baltimore County: Tuesday, Sept 8.

* Carroll County: Tuesday, Sept. 8.

* Harford County: Tuesday, Sept. 8.

* Howard County: today.

The early start means that students in the city and in Howard and Anne Arundel counties can complete the state-mandated 180 days of schooling by June 10, assuming that they lose no days because of the weather or other emergencies.
