NORTH COUNTY KNIGHTS

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Head coach: Chuck Markiewicz (third season).

Assistant coaches: Brad Wilson, Don Usewick, Al Pindell, Mike Francis and Bob Powell.

1991 record: 8-3, lost to Oxon Hill, 39-0, in 3A quarterfinals.

Returnees: Seniors Damon Martin (SB), Eric Howard (QB-P), Mike Quarles (SB-QB), Vinnie Elliott (LB), Damian Ferragamo (C), Erik Schwink (RG), Chris Martin (OT) and Adam Watkowski (OT); juniors Troy Fowlkes (NG), Corey Fowler (DT-OL), Jarryn Avery (OG), Teon Carter (DB-SE), Mike Drocella (DB-RB) and Reggie Moore (QB).

Newcomers: Senior Frank Brown (RB-DB); junior Kevin Mitchell (SE); sophomore Mike SMith (DT).

Coach's outlook: "It's way too early to say [if North County should be the league favorite]. And I'm not ducking anything. If I thought we'd be good, I'd say so. I do think we're going to be good, but it's just too early to tell. If things go the way we plan, we'll be there."

Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: Last season, North County duplicated its 8-2 regular-season record of the previous year, but went a step further in qualifying for the 4A state playoffs. The Knights could be ready to make even greater strides this fall and win a postseason game, which would be quite a coup, considering the program is in only its third year. If Moore recovers fully from a summer motorcycle accident, the Knights will be extra deep at quarterback. They already have the county's best receiver in Martin. Sorry, Chuck, but the Knights have to be considered the favorite.
