Newcomers to watch: Juniors Mark Bolea (C), Danny Gardner (LB), Toby Heusser (G), Chris Cordisco (LB), Jeff Cordisco (DB), Matt Buening (FB), Joe Lupo (G), Matt Morraye (QB/DB); Sophomore Sean Lookingbill (QB).

Coach's outlook: "We're much stronger physically this year, we've got more numbers, and we're further along than we were at this point last year by a long shot. If we don't have any major injuries, we should be in all of our games. The most important game for us will be Liberty [season opener]. We have to win early."

Howard County Sun outlook: The Gladiators drew 40 varsity players to summer practice, a sign that Ashwell's young program is getting healthier. And seven starters return from a team that lost three games by a combined three touchdowns. Still, Glenelg lacks the speed required to contend. The Gladiators slowly are coming, but they aren't ready to arrive yet.
