Public schools in the Baltimore area begin opening their doors tomorrow.

The reason for the early start is that Labor Day is late this year -- Sept. 7 -- and the school systems had to choose between starting early or ending the school year late in June.

Area schools open on the following dates:

* Howard County: Tomorrow.

* Anne Arundel County: Tomorrow.

* Baltimore City: Tuesday.

* Baltimore County: Tuesday, Sept 8.

* Carroll County: Tuesday, Sept. 8.

* Harford County: Tuesday, Sept. 8.

The early start means that students in the city and in Howard and Anne Arundel counties can complete the state-mandated 180 days of schooling by June 10, assuming they lose no days because of the weather or other emergencies.
