Gov. William Donald Schaefer was admitted yesterday to Johns Hopkins Hospital for undisclosed tests and was expected to be released today, a spokeswoman said.
His acting press secretary, Page W. Boinest, said the 70-year-old governor was admitted at 3 p.m. yesterday for the tests, which had not been scheduled in advance. Mr. Schaefer was alert and resting comfortably, she said.
Ms. Boinest declined to provide details on his condition. She did say Mr. Schaefer did not arrive at the Baltimore hospital by ambulance.
Sources told The Sun that the governor was in the Hopkins coronary care unit, but the hospital would not confirm this.
The governor's scheduled visit to Cambridge on the Eastern Shore today was canceled, as were his plans to attend the NFL exhibition game between the New Orleans Saints and Miami Dolphins in Baltimore last night.
In Cambridge, Mr. Schaefer was to have participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new Chun King headquarters there.
