UMBC relay teams swim to top 16 finish

Three relay teams with the UMBC Retriever Aquatic Club notched finishes among the top 16 last week at the U.S. Senior Swim Championships in Mission Viejo, Calif.

Cheryl White (Mount Hebron), Megan Malchak (UMBC), Elysia Moreland (Howard) and Candie Johnson (Westminster) teamed to finish 15th (4:26.42) in the women's 400 medley relay.

Ingrid Kilpe (Centennial), Johnson, Moreland and White placed 11th (8:35.40) in the 800 freestyle relay.

The best relay performance, UMBC coach Sid Burkot said, came from the same team that finished 11th in the 800 free. They took 8th place (3:57.72) in the 400 free relay.

Moreland also shined in an individual event, placing 12th (2:17.11) in the 200 butterfly, her fastest swim ever for the event.
