The body of an 18-month-old girl reported missing Sunday was found in a container on the front porch of her family's Reservoir Hill home this morning, police said.
Investigators are seeking the toddler's father for questioning, said Agent Doug Price, spokesman for city police, although no charges had been lodged against him.
The girl's mother, Katrina Grimes, 18, told police she realized her daughter -- Shelby Marie Smith -- was missing when she woke up at about 6 a.m. yesterday, Agent Price said.
Ms. Grimes, her daughter and another child were sleeping in a third-floor bedroom of the family's rowhouse in the 900 block of Brooks Lane.
Investigators searched the house and the neighborhood after Ms. Grimes called police, but did not find the baby, Agent Price said.
The body was discovered by a relative about 8:20 a.m. today, police said. The body was in what police would describe only as "a container." By-standers said the container may have been a trash can or bag.
An autopsy by the state Medical Examiner's Office has been ordered.
Ms. Grimes, crying hysterically, was driven away for medical treatment and further questioning.
"Let me go . . . Let me out of here," she cried from a police cruiser parked outside her home.
As the wrapped body of the girl was carried to an ambulance, neighbors and friends standing on the sidewalk shook their heads.
