3 men from area reporting for duty

Marine Pfc. Bart J. Redifer, son of George J. and Kathleen M. Redifer of Eldersburg, recently reported for duty with the 8th Motor Transport Battalion, 2nd Force Service Support Group, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

A 1991 Liberty High School graduate, he joined the Marine Corps in December 1991.

* Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Thomas E. Butcher recently reported for duty aboard the submarine USS Norfolk, based in Portsmouth, N.H.

He is the son of Lawrence E. and Susan H. Butcher of Finksburg.

* Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Daniel L. Nichols, recently participated in the commissioning ceremony aboard the guided missile cruiser USS Shiloh, homeported in San Diego.

Shiloh is a 569-foot Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser constructed at Bath Iron Works in Bath, Maine.

The ship is the 21st of 27 cruisers planned for the class and the seventh of eight being built at the Bath Iron Works.

The cruiser is armed with missiles, guns, torpedoes and helicopters. Shiloh is the first U.S. Navy ship to bear the name of the famous Civil War battle of Shiloh. With more than 20,000 casualties, the battle was fought April 3, 1862, in Shiloh, Tenn.

The ship was launched Sept. 8, 1990, and commissioned at Bath July 18, 1992.

Petty Officer Nichols is the son of Larry A. Nichols of Mount Airy.

The 1986 graduate of Linganore High School, Frederick County, joined the Navy in July 1986.

Bacon back from duty in training exercise

Marine Sgt. Anthony C. Bacon, son of Cornelius J. Bacon of Sykesville, recently returned from Operation Ocean Venture with the 3rd Battalion, 8th Marines, 2nd Marine Division of Camp Lejeune, N.C.

This was the largest joint exercise using airborne mine counter-measure operations since Operation Desert Storm.

The primary mission of the operation was minesweeping in the area of amphibious landing operations.

Mine-hunting sonar and detonating devices were used to clear the way for Navy surface vessels.
