San Francisco Giants -- Placed OF Chris James on 15-day DL retroactive to Aug. 15. Activated IF Craig Colbert from the 15-day DL.

San Antonio Spurs -- Announced that F Terry Cummings has undergone successful surgery to reconstruct a knee ligament torn during a pickup game. The rehabilitation could take up to a year.
Cai Zaragoza (Spanish ACB League) -- Agreed to terms with F John Turner (Glenarden), who averaged 2.8 points and 1.9 rebounds in 42 games last season for the Houston Rockets.
Kansas -- Signed football coach Glen Mason to a five-year contract extension through 1997. The Jayhawks were 6-5 last year in Mason's fourth season. It was their first winning season since 1981.
UMBC -- Announced the hiring of assistant soccer coaches Kevin Jones (an assistant at Johns Hopkins last year) and Denis Krupa (formerly an assistant at Loyola College, University of Maryland and the Maryland Bays). Announced that Jerry Milani has been named assistant sports information director.
UMES -- Announced the signing of six basketball recruits: junior college transfers G Zack Allison (Compton, Calif.), G Dale Harrison (Omaha, Neb.) and F Duray Thirdgill (Portland, Ore.); freshmen G Aaron McKinney (Portland, Ore.), F Mike Smith (St. Frances-Charles Hall) and C Corey Snowden (Somerset, N.J.).

Philadelphia Eagles -- Waived G William Boatwright, a seventh-round pick from Virginia Tech.
Pittsburgh Steelers -- Agreed to terms with SS Carnell Lake, who was second on the team in tackles last season with 83.
