'Kathleen' has royal win at Laurel

LAUREL -- The outside post was no impediment to Kathleen The Queen yesterday.

Jockey Walter Guerra guided her to the front out of the gate in the $23,000 allowance feature at Laurel, and they went on to score a wire-to-wire victory -- the third for Kathleen The Queen in her past four starts.

It wasn't easy as Gala Goldilocks pressed the pace after the midway point of the six-furlong race. But Kathleen The Queen prevailed by a head in a two-horse duel.

Favored Mixed Appeal surrendered the rail in the early jumps and chased the top two all the way.

Prado eyes title

Edgar Prado will compete during the upcoming Timonium meeting in his attempt to overtake Northern California jockey Russell Baze, the only rider who leads him nationally in victories.

But Prado is scheduled to take at least one day off from the Maryland circuit to be aboard Jolie's Halo in the $1 million Pacific Classic, the final leg of the American Championship Racing Series at Del Mar in Southern California on Aug. 30.

The pair teamed up to equal the track record for nine furlongs (1 minute, 46 4/5 seconds) at Monmouth Park in the most recent ACRS event, the Iselin Handicap.

Jolie's Halo has been supplemented to the Pacific Classic for $30,000 by owner Arthur Appleton.

Tommy Turner is scheduled to be aboard the Bill Donovan-trained Diamond Duo in the $75,000 Arlington Oaks Aug. 29 at Arlington Park. . . . Guerra and Freddy Castillo scored the riding doubles yesterday. Guerra also won aboard first-time starter Shy Minstrel ($8.40) in the third race. Dale Capuano saddled two winners to move into undisputed possession of third place in the trainer's standings with 13 winners.
