Shoplifter pulls gun on security guard

A shoplifter pulled a gun on a department store security guard last week after a foot chase at the parking lot of The Mall in Columbia.

Police said two men were allegedly stealing clothes from Hecht's Thursday afternoon when they were stopped by security guards. One man was arrested, but the other fled to an awaiting car.

Police said as the security guard approached the car, the man pulled a gun and drove off.

Police describe the gunman as 5-foot-7, thin, black, with shaved hair, wearing a long-sleeved denim shirt and blue shorts.

Police said no shots were fired. They are continuing their investigation.

Earl Grafton Douglas, 28, of the 1700 block of E. Baltimore St., Baltimore, who was arrested at the store, was charged with shoplifting.

Teen-ager robs boy of $5 at video arcade

An 11-year-old boy was robbed of $5 by a 16-year-old after the two played video games together at The Mall in Columbia last week.

Police said the two had finished playing a video game Thursday night at Champions arcade when the teen-ager told the Ellicott Cityboy to hand over the rest of his money. The boy turned to leave but surrendered the money after the teen-ager said he had a knife.

Police said the youths did not know each other.

Police describe the 16-year-old as 6 feet, black, with a high flattop. He was wearing blue sweat pants and a navy blue jacket with wide gray stripes across the front.

Three teens arrested in car break-ins

Three Columbia teen-agers were arrested last week after police found them allegedly stealing stereo equipment and other items from cars in a village of Owen Brown parking lot.

Police responding to a suspicious activity call at Loring Drive in Sewells Orchard found several items on the ground and several people inside a car.

Police arrested Robert W. Baumann, 19, of the 7300 block of Hickory Log Circle and charged him with five counts of theft under $300. He was released on personal recognizance.

Two Columbia youths -- a 15- and a 16-year-old -- also were arrested and released to their parents' custody.

Police say they are responsible for breaking into five cars and stealing money, a CB radio, a radar detector and a cassette tape holder.

Police are looking for other suspects.
