Columbia man dies in crash 3 perish in other accidents

One man was killed and another person was seriously injured early yesterday when a car ran off a road in Columbia and sheared off a utility pole, Howard County police said.

Also, three people died in traffic accidents in Montgomery and Prince George's counties early yesterday and Thursday.

Howard County

Harry Herbert Pack, 28, of the 10400 block of Route 108 in Columbia died in the Howard accident. The driver of the car, Elias Woodron Howes, 47, of no fixed address, was flown to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he was listed in critical but stable condition.

The accident occurred just after 2 a.m. when Mr. Howes' 1983 Toyota Celica failed to negotiate a curve on Route 108 just west of Harpers Farm Road, ran off the road, struck the pole and overturned. Mr. Pack was a passenger in the vehicle, which rolled over him, police said.

Montgomery County

A 22-year-old sailor assigned to the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda was killed early yesterday.

State police said the sailor, whose name was withheld pending notification of relatives, was driving a 1986 Honda on Jones Bridge Road east of Connecticut Avenue in Bethesda at 12:50 a.m. when he lost control and the car struck a utility pole.

Police said the driver died at the scene. A passenger, an unidentified New York man, was injured and was taken to Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, where he was in stable condition.

Prince George's County

At 6 p.m. Thursday, John Griggs, 35, of Hartsville, S.C., was driving a 1980 White tractor and pulling a 30-foot boat trailer south on U.S. 301 near Croom Station Road south of Upper Marlboro when he noticed the trailer was fish-tailing.

Police said Mr. Griggs attempted to correct the situation but the rig jack-knifed, crossed over two lanes of traffic and crashed into trees. Police said the driver was ejected from the tractor and run over by the trailer's wheels. He died at the scene.

At 3 p.m. Thursday, Amy Seybolt, 18, of Upper Marlboro was driving a 1987 Oldsmobile north on U.S. 301, attempting to make a left turn onto Rosaryville Road south of Upper Marlboro when she crossed into the path of a southbound 1988 Chevrolet driven by James Potter of Charlotte Hall. The Potter car struck the passenger's side of Ms. Seybolt's car.

Pronounced dead at the scene was Tacey Walker, 19, of Clinton, a passenger in the Oldsmobile.
