Taneytown racers roll to weekend wins


Scott Chasen and Gene Belt, both of Taneytown, came away winners at the Mason-Dixon Dragway in Hagerstown on Sunday night.

Chasen, driving his 1967 Falcon, captured the Class II Heavy honors by running an elapsed time of 12.79 seconds on an estimated dial-in of 12.75. Woodbine's Ed Talbert advanced to the semifinals and Chris Hruska of Mount Airy was a third-round winner.

Belt came away with the top prize in the motorcycle division, running a 9.49 estimated time on a 9.38 dial-in on his 1100cc Suzuki.

In the Super-ET Class, Mount Airy's Woody Etzler reached the semifinals, Westminster's Larry Hoff advanced through four rounds, and Joe Mayne of Mount Airy, Norman Morris of New Windsor and George Hoff of Westminster all had second-round wins.

In other weekend motor sports action:

* Westminster's Gary Stuhler came away with a big win in the 25-lap late-model feature Sunday night at Hagerstown Speedway.

Stuhler grabbed the lead on Lap 19 and didn't look back, gaining his third Hagerstown win of the year. The night before, Stuhler took second place in the same feature at Winchester (Va.) Speedway.

In the 15-lap modified semi-late feature back at Hagerstown, Al Shawver Jr. of Finksburg came back from a first lap spin-out to take third place.

* Greg Etzler of Mount Airy won the Class II event Aug. 1 at 75-80 Dragway. Westminster's Rick Waxter was a quarterfinalist.

In Class I, Sam Bataglia and Larry Mayne, both of Mount Airy, were quarterfinalists. Westminster's Chuck Taylor and George Hoff, along with MountAiry's Gary Warthen, bowed out in the previous round.

Belt was the runner-up in the motorcycle class.

Westminster's Steve Owings and Brad McClelland took third and fourth places, respectively, in the 20-lap micro-sprint feature Sunday night at Hill Valley. Owings had earlier won a heat race.

* Westminster's Randy Zechman took fourth place in the 15-lap semi-late feature at Lincoln Speedway in Hanover, Pa., Aug. 1.

Jesse Wentz of Manchester took sixth in the first feature and came back to take ninth place in the second feature.
