HANOVER -- A 20-year-old Severn man was thrown from his car and fatally injured early yesterday when the vehicle ran off Route 170 and crashed into a tree, state police said.

It appeared that Paul John Burash may have fallen asleep at the wheel as he drove his 1990 Honda Accord on Route 170 south in northern Anne Arundel County, said Trooper Michael Pfisterer. About 1:50 a.m., the car crossed the center line, crossed both northbound lanes and continued along the roadside before hitting a tree.

Mr. Burash was taken by the county rescue workers to North Arundel Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The accident brings to 365 the number of people killed in highway traffic accidents this year, 27 fewer than this time last year, according to state police.
