Confessed killer likely to be hospitalized

A Silver Spring man who confessed to killing his parents suffers from paranoid schizophrenia and probably will be confined to a mental hospital, officials said.

Brian Bechtold, 23, was scheduled to go on trial yesterday, but his case has been postponed until Sept. 28 to allow attorneys time to respond to the insanity findings by doctors at Clifton T. Perkins Hospital Center in Jessup, where Mr. Bechtold is being held.

In a memo filed with the court, Assistant State's Attorney John McCarthy said he would not contest the finding but wants to speak personally with Mr. Bechtold's family before a final disposition is made.

County prosecutors often challenge the conclusions of private psychiatrists hired by attorneys for a defendant, but they rarely dispute the findings of state psychiatrists.

He is charged with killing George W. Bechtold, 54, and Dorothy Bechtold, 63.
