A 27-year-old Kennedy Krieger Institute worker was shot and killed yesterday as her co-workers watched in horror, Baltimore police said.
The woman's estranged husband, Michael Hudgins, 29, of the 2300 block of Longwood Circle in Woodlawn, was charged with first-degree murder and using a handgun in the commission of a felony.
Following charges at police headquarters, Mr. Hudgins, a correctional officer at the Maryland House of Correction in Jessup, was transported to the Eastern District, where he was held overnight with bail pending a bail review hearing today.
Police said the victim, Donna Hudgins, recently left Mr. Hudgins.
Employees of the institute in the 2900 block of E. Biddle St. told police Mr. Hudgins arrived at 4:30 p.m. and began looking for his wife. When he located her sitting behind her desk among four cubicles in an office on the first floor, he allegedly fired several shots at his wife, said Agent Doug Price, a city police spokesman.
Police said the woman was hit in the chest, neck and face at nearly point-blank range. Ms. Hudgins, whose job title was unknown last night, was pronounced dead at the scene, he said.
Investigators alerted area police of Mr. Hudgins' name and the license plate of the car he was driving. He was arrested by Baltimore County police later in Woodlawn, police said.
