Marine Sgt. John Fela, son of Bertha A. Audit of Laurel, received a letter of appreciation for his professional performance of duties while assigned to Marine Corps Air Station, Yuma, Ariz.
Sergeant Fela is a 1983 graduate of Hammond High School.
Gaylor awarded medal
Air Force Maj. Don K. Gaylor of Ellicott City was awarded the Air Medal while assigned to the 315th Airlift Wing at Charleston Air Force Base, S.C.
Major Gaylor was presented the medal for meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flight.
Sprow receives award
Navy Lt. Cmdr. Curt W. Sprow, a 1975 graduate of Howard High School, recently received the Navy Achievement Award.
Commander Sprow was cited for superior performance of duty while serving aboard the amphibious transport dock, USS Cleveland, home-ported in San Diego.
Gaither in infantry
Marine Pfc. Michael F. Gaither, son of Roderick and Joann Gaither of Columbia, has completed work in the School of Infantry at Camp Lejeune, N.C.
Private Gaither is a 1986 graduate of Howard High School.

Army Pvt. Morris J. Hedges Jr. has completed basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C.
He is the son of Morris and Geraldine Hedges of Sykesville.
DuBois aboard ship
Navy Ensign Ronald A. DuBois, son of Maurice and Ann DuBois of Ellicott City, has reported for duty aboard the USS Trenton, an amphibious transport dock. The ship will spend six months in the Mediterranean Sea as part of the Mediterranean Amphibious Ready Group.
Ensign DuBois is a 1986 graduate of Mount Hebron High School.
Houchins is ranger
Army Sgt. William D. Houchins Jr., son of William D. Houchins of Ellicott City, has graduated from the 58-day ranger course at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga.
Training sites included the mountains of northern Georgia, the -- desert at Fort Bliss, Texas and the Florida swamps.
Navy Seaman Apprentice Michael S. Fabricius, son of Patricia Hill of Ellicott City, returned from Central America aboard the frigate USS Francis Hammond's final deployment.
He is a 1987 graduate of Howard High School.
Marine 2nd Lt. Thomas T. Taylor, son of Thomas Taylor of Ellicott City, was commissioned to his present rank upon graduation from Georgetown University in Washington.
Marine Gunnery Sgt. Shawn M. Farrow, son of Kathryn C. Farrow of Laurel, recently received a letter of appreciation from the Marine Fighter Attack Squadron-232, Marine Corps Air Station, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. Sergeant Farrow was cited for performing his duties in a professional manner.
Army Pvt. 1st Class Damon C. Wise, son of Eldridge and Joan Wise of Highland, has graduated from the electronic warfare intercept system repair course at Fort Devens, Ayers, Mass.
He is a 1987 graduate of Atholton High School.
Cornely arrives in Va.
Navy Cmdr. Edward P. Cornely, son of Walter and Margaret R. Cornely of Columbia, has arrived in Norfolk, Va., aboard the submarine tender USS Simon Lake. The ship recently changed its home-port to Norfolk after five years in Holy Loch, Scotland.
Commander Cornely joined the Navy in May 1973.
Smith aboard tender
Navy Chief Petty Officer Bernard V. Smith, son of Ingibjorg Smith of Laurel, recently returned to Holy Loch, Scotland, aboard the Submarine Tender USS Simon Lake after participating in "Teamwork 92," a multinational NATO exercise.
A 1969 graduate of Potomac Senior High School, Oxon Hill, Chief Smith joined the Navy in May 1982.
