Beating victim hospitalized

A 29-year-old man was in critical condition yesterday at Sinai Hospital after being beaten by four young males on a Northwest Baltimore street corner late Sunday as ho ordered his 12-year-old daughter home.

Four suspects, one of them a 16-year-old boy, have been charged with assault with intent to murder in the beating of Leonard Warfield Downing of the 3000 block of Spaulding Ave.

Police said Mr. Downing, who had been looking for his daughter, found her at Park Heights and Woodland avenues shortly after 11 p.m. After he was knocked to the pavement, witnesses said, one youth kicked him in the head. Mr. Downing got up and ran from his attackers but collapsed.

The girl stayed with her father, police said.

Charged were Michael Jarmane Watkins, 19, of the 4900 block of Denmore Ave.; John Dixon, 21, and Aswad Kareem Estreet, 18, both of the 5900 block of St. Regis Road; and Anthony T. Brooks, 16, of the 4900 block of Lanier Ave., who was charged as an adult.
