Arnold man killed in motorcycle crash
MILLERSVILLE -- A 23-year-old Arnold man was killed when he lost control of his motorcycle, struck a sign support pole, then hit a guardrail.
Robert Bruce Nelson of the 200 block of Raintree Court was traveling east on Route 32 on his 1990 Honda Saturday night when he attempted to exit onto the ramp to Route 3 north, but failed to negotiate the turn.
He was pronounced dead at North Arundel Hospital just after 6 p.m.
Police said excessive speed was the primary cause of the accident.
Grocery store hit by fire a third time
BALTIMORE -- Firefighters rescued three young birds from a fire at an East Baltimore food market yesterday morning, the third blaze to hit the store since December.
No one was injured, but flames singed the nest containing the chicks that were living above the front door.
The fire damaged the outside of the Sky Food Mart, in the 1800 block of East Lafayette Avenue. Some of the store's contents were damaged.
Capt. Stephan G. Fugate, of the fire investigation bureau, said the fire probably was sparked by someone who discarded a cigarette in a box next to the store that served as a makeshift trash can.
The fire started shortly before 11 a.m. and was brought under control by firefighters in only 12 minutes.
Captain Fugate said an electrical fire burned out the store in December. The next day, he said, neighborhood youths looted what was left and started another fire. The new owner, Young Park of Cockeysville, said he will repair his store and hopes to open again by today.
