Greenwell of Red Sox to have surgery

ARLINGTON, Tex. -- Leftfielder Mike Greenwell will have surgery on his right elbow within the week and could be lost to the team for the season.

Boston Red Sox manager Butch Hobson said after last night's game that Greenwell will have an operation after getting a second opinion from Richmond, Va., orthopedic surgeon Frank McCue tomorrow.

Greenwell was placed on the 15-day disabled list after the 3-2 loss to the Texas Rangers.

Greenwell, who had been trying to avoid surgery on the elbow, which has a tear inside the joint, left the team today to fly to Richmond. He'll then travel back to Boston and set up a date for surgery with team physician Arthur Pappas.

The Red Sox' other starting outfielders, rightfielder Phil Plantier and centerfielder Ellis Burks, are also hurting. Plantier says his ailing right knee is getting worse and Burks has a sore right knee and aching back.
