Esswein takes Major All Events honor


James Esswein of Antietam, Jennifer Miele of Hampstead and Becky Johns of Glen Burnie were the high scorers in the Maryland State Youth Bowling championships held at Turner's Dual Lanes in Hagerstown.

Esswein, who carries a 147 average, had the high game of 278, high series of 703 and was the Major Boys Handicap All Events winner with 2,276. Miele had the high game for girls, 226, and Johns had the high series, 601.

* Tournament bound: Four pairs of Marylanders are headed for National Family/Adult-Child Tournament to be held in San Antonio, Texas, Aug. 20-23. All won spots in the nations by winning the state tournament at Elk Lanes.

Tanya Frock and Charles Shutt, Elk Lanes, won the Adult-Youth 12 and Under division with a 2,357. Dawn Hirsch and Kevin Leist, Country Club, were second, 2,356, Missy McDonough and Bill Menges, The Bowler, were third, 2,334.

Derrick and George Smith, Bel Air, won the Parent/Youth 12 and under with 2,444, followed by Chris Dill and Jim Alleger, Elk, 2,427 and Robert Sykes, Jr. and Sr., Eastern Shore, 2,422. Kristofer and Ginny Courtney, Bel Air, won the Parent/Teen 13 to 18 with 2,523, followed by Rebecca and Charles Cramer, The Bowler, 2,450 and Shawn and Annette Lapoli, Elk, 2,431.
