STILLWATER, Okla. -- Team Maryland assured itself of at least a fourth-place finish at the Sun Belt Classic at Oklahoma State, rallying for three runs in bottom of sixth for a 3-1 victory over Team Georgia yesterday.
Team Maryland (3-2) has a chance to play in the championship game today at 7 p.m. If Team Florida won its game last night against Team Ohio, and Team Oklahoma defeats Team California in the other night game, Team Maryland will meet Team Florida for the title.
If Team Florida or Team Oklahoma loses, the championship picture becomes cloudy because three teams will have two losses and then numerous tiebreaker games would have to be played. The worse Team Maryland can do would be the third-place game at 4 p.m. today.
Trailing 1-0 in the sixth, Team Maryland tied the score on a double by Ronnie Shankle scoring James Watts from second. With two outs and the bases loaded, Roger Main's (Patterson) grounder was booted, allowing Shankle and John Bowles to score.
Bobby St. Pierre went the distance for Team Maryland, allowing
five hits, striking out nine and walking none.
