Man thrown from car, killed driver held

A man riding on the trunk of his friend's car was killed early today when the car swerved and threw him onto the pavement in the 1800 block of N. Chester St.

Police said Martez Moyd, 26, of the 4700 block Kimberly Road was on the trunk of a battered 1981 Honda driven by Clayton Smith, 21, of the 1500 block of N. Bradford St., about 2:30 a.m. The car swerved at high speed, throwing Mr. Moyd to the street and into a parked car, police said. Witnesses told them the driver stopped, backed up, looked at the victim lying in the street and drove off.

Mr. Moyd was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:07 a.m.

About two hours later, police said, they went to Mr. Smith's house, where they found him hiding in a closet, and arrested him.

Police charged him with automobile manslaughter, failure to remain at the scene of a fatal accident and driving without a license.

Additional charges are pending, police said.
